From an inertial viewer's perspective you are travelling toward the sun at nearly speed of light and it takes you ~8 minutes to crash into the sun. Repeat the experiment except I accelerate you to. But from your perspective it only took ~1 minute to crash into the sun. But from your perspective it only took ~14 minutes to crash into the sun. From an inertial viewer's perspective you are travelling toward the sun at half the speed of light and it takes you ~16 minutes to crash into the sun. Let's say I put you in a spaceship and accelerate you to 50% the speed of light toward the sun. But you can observe what happens as you approach it: It's impossible for an object with mass to go the speed of light. I'm sure there is a much simpler way to intuit it, though :) Now that we have two points in-line with the object, we find the point with the same total mass that exerts and equivalent force, and lo and behold it is at the center. We find that the density is linearly correlated to the area of the corresponding section, and we then take the closer half of the rod, multiply the density by 1/r^2, and find that it is constant!įor the far half of the rod, we cannot do this, so instead we divide it into two halves of equal pull, then divide those to halves and so on, and find that it this reduces to the equivalent of a point. You do this for all distances x, and you will find an equivalent rod going from the attracted objected to the center of the sphere, of a non-uniform but symmetrical density. The intuition we came up with when we had to solve this issue in undergrad physics was interesting.įor each point of any given distance, you can find a disk of points at the plane of the same distance whose gravitational pull will be equivalent to a single point at their center. On human scales, the time dimension is much "bigger" than the space dimensions (we're quite big in the time dimension and quite small in the spatial dimensions) the ball moves only a small distance through space but a very large distance through time, amounting to a big distance in spacetime, and so the slight curvature has a bigger effect than you might expect. Intuitive answer: the curve is indeed very gentle, and (e.g.) light will be deflected only very slightly by the curvature but the ball is moving for a couple of seconds, and that's an eternity. I'll answer this question as I understand it, but I only took four lectures of General Relativity before I gave it up in favour of computability and logic, so if there is a more intuitive and/or less wrong answer out there, please correct me. I heard an interesting question at one point: "how come, when you throw a ball up on Earth, the parabola is so strongly curved? Spacetime is nearly flat, so how can a straight line become such a steep parabola?" An extra feature is the password protected Encrypted Storage. This recording featured Allen alone, appearing in a variety of computer-generated virtual formats, from solo horn to little-big band. Taking advantage of some newly acquired recording equipment and computer software, the saxophonist recorded a "solo" recording, The Bloody Happy song (GAC Records, 2020). But rather than simply wait to see what happened, Allen jumped headlong into two ambitious projects. In particular, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen took the pandemic head on by cutting a European tour short in March 2020, returning to New York City. The COVID pandemic has changed many things about daily life, creating something of a new, mutated "normal." This is no more apparent than in many of the "outside-the-box" methods that performance artists have used to subsist and ply their trade during a virtual lockdown. Not unlike his years as an excellent tenor saxophonist, his solos display a bold approach and always stays true to the core of each song.įrom the beginning to the end of Milo's Illinois, Allen's and Karn's resourcefulness is a joy to behold. Left to his own devices for substantial portions of the record, Karn forges his own space within the music. The swagger of Karn's walking lines include brief, ear catching variations in timbre and emphasis which enhance his resolute momentum. In other cases, loquacious, irregular sequences speak for themselves while reinforcing Allen. In some instances, minimalistic combinations of notes are spot-on yet suggest an adventurous spirit. Seizing the opportunity to act as something more than a dutiful, one-man rhythm section, he asserts himself as an equal partner while remaining mindful of fundamental responsibilities to the music. Meticulously constructed narratives betray no signs of inessential detail, inflated climaxes, and gratuitous emotion.ĭuring the heads and Allen's solos Karn walks the tightrope by offering vigorous commentary as well as providing harmonic and rhythmic underpinning. In his domain, temperance is truly a virtue. Indicative of a clear-sighted player with a lyrical streak, Allen's improvisations are devoid of the shock and awe moments that have become commonplace in contemporary jazz. He executes refined variations of the melodies (a delightfully frisky rendition of "Tenderly" is a noteworthy exception) and makes each phrase sound like a distinct entity that merits scrutiny. His penchant for taking a somewhat different course on the in and out heads contribute to the record's extemporaneous character. Although the tracks generally evolve in a head/solos/head manner, there's nothing facile about Allen's and Karn's use of familiar methods.įor the most part, Allen's thoughtful, straightforward approach to the songs favors gradations in tone instead of flashy detours or ornate embellishment. From "Just One of Those Things," to "Tea for Two," to "A Time for Love," their ingenuity and playfulness make time-honored material sound-and feel-vigorous and essential. Allen and Karn don't simply play the songs they live and breathe inside of them. The disc's eleven tracks aren't exercises in nostalgia or cynical attempts to attract a financially viable segment of an ever-shrinking jazz audience. Their dialogues on songs spanning several decades of the twentieth century (as well as a couple of originals) are so complete and deeply satisfying that the presence of a chordal instrument or drums would only serve to muddy the waters. Evincing a tone that was self- contained, free of affectation, and rife with nuance he improvised tales in the context of songs from the Great American Songbook.įor those who haven't had the opportunity to hear him in such an ideal setting, there's Milo's Illinois, a superb date co-led by Allen and bassist Mike Karn. Standing less than five feet from the first row of tables, Allen didn't feel the need to huff and puff and blow the house down. Obliviously noisy diners were conspicuous by their absence. His tenor sax, an acoustic piano and an upright bass were not miked or amplified in any way. Allen's contributions to the opening set transpired amid a splendid convergence of circumstances. In February of 2019, Harry Allen played a gig at Shanghai Jazz, a restaurant/jazz club in Madison, New Jersey. It was during the 2400-mile trip out west that we registered the first of many complaints about the 16-gallon fuel tank's limited range. With direct-fitment winter tires unavailable, we sent the GT350 to California to pass the colder months. Lesson learned.īehold the glory of an uncovered V-8. The failed rally stage required another trip to the body shop, in which the resurfaced passenger door and some more Grabber Blue paint cost us $832. An eight-second, tank-slapping ride on loose gravel left the Mustang high-sided on a local road's shoulder. As it turns out, this car is not suited for off-road duty. In total, the raccoon set us back $3684, $1508 of which was for the vinyl stripes-more than three times the original cost to have the entire car thus equipped.īut that wouldn't be the only damage we inflicted on the GT350. Restoring the stripes and clear protective wrap took another four trips to accomplish. The incident damaged the bumper cover, splitter, various trim pieces, and a fender-mounted oil cooler, requiring a trip to the shop for repairs and fresh paint. The farmlands of southeast Michigan breed not only large humans, but also raccoons the size of grizzly bears, one of which became acquainted with the Shelby at high speed late one night. Not long after our initial test, we indulged in a little animal sacrifice. On the skidpad, the Mustang's lateral adhesion measured 1.02 g's at the start and gained 0.01 g by 40,000 miles. When our car was new, the 70-to-zero-mph panic stop took 153 feet, but that stretched to 164 feet in the end, likely because the onset of winter made it difficult to get heat into the rubber for our final test session. At 40,000 miles, it posted identical numbers for both tests. But once we got past it, the GT350 clicked off a zero-to-60-mph time of 4.2 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 12.4 at 118 mph. Obeying the 1000-mile break-in period by not revving the engine sky-high took painful restraint. We also chose the no-cost Grabber Blue paint, a head-turning shade of awesomeness, and white over-the-roof racing stripes to pay homage to Shelbys of the past-only $475, but a decision we would later regret. We opted for the $3000 Electronics pack, which adds Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system, turn-signal mirrors, navigation, and dual-zone climate control. We ordered the $57,045 GT350, which includes a $1300 penalty from the Man for consuming too much fuel, and selected only a few extras. Although we were curious about the durability and performance of the extreme GT350R's carbon-fiber wheels, our acne-riddled roads and the wheels' replacement costs-$4175 apiece for the fronts and $3517 for each of the rears-shook us out of our reverie. We did keep our wits about us for one critical decision when ordering our long-termer. I feel like my right foot has been possessed by the spirit of Carroll Shelby." -Eddie Alterman, editor-in-chief "Ford sure named this voodoo engine right. “Free” is the cheapest way to get to Hawaii and one we’ve taken advantage of many times. Obviously the cheapest way to go to Hawaii is not to pay for it! When your friends ask you how to go do Hawaii on a budget, this is usually the first trick you’ll want to tell them about. Especially for west coasters who already have access to bargain plane tickets to the Aloha State, this might be one the cheapest way to travel to Hawaii. ❗ Learn more: How to get the Southwest companion passĪnd it’s not one of those gimmicks where you have to pay an exorbitant price for the first ticket in order to use a companion fare on the second one (as with some old Amex promotions), you can just buy any regular ticket on the website. I only have to pay $5.60 to bring another family member with me! See the latest Southwest credit card promotions to get your Companion Pass. Still and all, the Companion Pass is such an amazing value that I recently opened two Southwest credit cards in anticipation of a return visit to Hawaii. There are also inter-island flights, but it’s definitely worth comparing prices versus local carrier Mokulele Airlines to find the cheapest option. Some US cities also get flights to Kauai and Big Island. The catch is that they don’t have an extensive route map if you live outside of the West Coast: currently they only offer non-stop service from California, Phoenix and Las Vegas to Hawaii, with the most extensive service to Oahu in Maui. The fastest way to earn your companion pass is by opening a Southwest credit card – even faster if you open a personal card and a business card. Southwest’s Companion Pass only requires that you pay taxes, so it can be a really great deal. Introductory fares were as low as $49 each way from select airports and eligible for Companion Pass! Now fares have settled in higher, but still cheaper than plenty of mainline carriers. In early 2019 Southwest launched their much-anticipated service to Hawaii. Even if you don’t end up paying cash, it’s always important to know the going rate for flights when evaluating whether or not an award redemption is worthwhile. We love using Skyscanner to find flights because it allows us to reflect our total flexibility – we can allow nearby airports on both ends and search for whole months at a time to land the best rate. The first place to start your search is on Skyscanner. Sometimes the simplest thing to do is pay cash for a plane ticket, and with the great deals you can often find from America’s west coast it just might make sense. Here are just a few ways to save money on airfare to Hawaii: Find the cheapest airfare for cash payment Second, weigh the many options you have for using cash or points to book those plane tickets. Since airfare and lodging are the two biggest components of your Hawaii trip cost, you’ll want to balance those two to minimize your costs.
